Muntri Grove, Penang exterior

Muntri Grove
Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia

On the original site of one of our Founder’s family shop-house now stands the beautifully restored Muntri Grove Hotel, part of a sublime collection of heritage, boutique and ultimately, LGBTQ-welcoming hotels – a rarity in more conservative Malaysia.

Featuring just 16 suites in the very heart of the UNESCO zone, a short walk away from the delights of Muntri Street and Love Lane, the big selling point of this property is its location, right in the core of the old town.

The Muntri Grove is one of those time traveller properties, harking back to the sophistication of Penang’s past, yet providing everything that a modern traveller would ever need or want. Four posters and luxurious ‘opium’ day-beds grace each suite, with floor-to-ceiling sliding doors on one side of the room and small, shuttered original windows on the other. Heritage furniture features throughout, harking back to the days of Penang’s trade boom and giving the property a Chinatown feel and sense of place.

Outside, we spent time lounging in the hotel’s plunge-pool, a much-needed respite from the searing island heat. The staff here are just lovely.

While you’re Out There
Heritage architecture fans are in for a treat, just a wander into the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Georgetown (right on the hotel’s doorstep, either left or right) will showcase some fine examples of period design: from grand British colonial buildings to ancient temples, to opulent clan houses. Our favourite, however, is the blue mansion, also known as the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion. If there’s one thing you have to do and see, to get a sense of Penang island’s rich history, it is this. And it’s a two-minute stroll away from the hotel.
