OutThere travellers look for transformative experiences that are mind-expanding and meaningful, when they travel, and are conscious of our impact on the destinations, not to mention generous in giving back to the communities that we encounter. This is why we’ve chosen to dedicate the first part of this issue to Sri Lanka, a country much in need of a comeback. While many of the world’s destinations get the opportunity to mature like a fine wine, this breathtakingly beautiful, storied, spiritual and experiential country has had the bad luck of being repeatedly ravaged by challenges that keep its much needed tourism growth at bay. But the ‘Teardrop Isle’ is on the rebound, readier than ever to be back in business.

To continue with the feel-good storytelling, we explore the SoCal enclave of San Diego to experience a city that’s intent on building bridges with its Mexican neighbours. We also head up to Gothenburg in West Sweden to see sustainability in action in a city that has an egalitarian approach to progress. We take a trip to the Sonoran plains in Scottsdale, Arizona, to be inspired by the people who have made something amazing out of absolutely nothing, the desert. And we make a return to what is arguably Canada’s most progressive French city, Montreal, to come face to face with the country’s rainbow-flag-waving Prime Minister Justin Trudeau making a stand for equality.

In our Basecamp section, design takes the driving seat. We sail steadfast towards the future of cruising on the space-age Celebrity Edge ship. For balance, we time-travel back to the 1950s in Palm Springs and immerse ourselves in some retro desert modernism. Revival architecture is also all the rage in Pattaya, Thailand, where we check into the exquisite Design Hotel™ that is Mason, which helped us reappraise a part of the country that we had decided we didn’t need to return to. And in the Middle East’s non-stop city Tel Aviv, we learn that the best things come in boutique-sized packages. We bring you the lowdown on all of this, plus the inside track on the most aesthetically delightful places to stay in Istanbul, Philadelphia and Bangkok.
