Man jumping in the foothills of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. An example of the kind of unscripted journeys we'll go on in 2025

Unscripted journeys:
The luxury experiences (and people) we can’t stop thinking about

There’s travel, and then there’s OutThere travel. We take immense pride in being part of an industry that has long been a wellspring of inspiration, offering life-changing experiences that broaden the mind, nurture the soul and provide glimpses into the extraordinary. At the close of last year, we had the privilege of attending ILTM Cannes, the global gathering where the future of luxury travel is shaped. It was here that we discovered some truly remarkable experiences and ‘unscripted journeys’. These encounters, alongside the passionate individuals behind them, align perfectly with OutThere’s vision: ones that spark joy, curiosity, shared humanity and connection. They will undoubtedly guide our travels in the year ahead (and beyond).

As we thunder into 2025, the weight of the world seems to have shifted – and inevitably, the way we travel shifts with it. So much has unfolded in just one month: the new, rather impetuous American administration, a succession of natural disasters and ongoing global conflicts, all fuelling anxiety, uncertainty, division and a reckoning with the values we hold dear.

This is a time that demands reflection, intention and purpose. Last month, The Experientialist published a two-part series (part 1 and part 2) exploring the motivations shaping how we travel this year. We suggested that luxury shouldn’t, and mustn’t, be reduced merely to five-star excess or repetitive, overproduced, glossy clichés. Instead, it should centre on unscripted journeys that are profoundly human. These experiences should not only delight travellers but challenge us, immersing us in cultures that long to be heard, and reminding us that empathy and exploration must always go hand in hand.

For us, the luxury travel brands of today (and tomorrow) aren’t ones that just give customers what they think they want – they’re the ones that dare to be different. True luxury, we believe, lies in pushing boundaries, crafting experiences that move people deeply, inspire critical thinking and foster genuine connections with the world around them. Unscripted journeys should also challenge conventions and be free from conformity or expectations. Of course, the essential luxury hospitality boxes must still be checked, but the most memorable experiences will be led by heart and vision, often weaving together diversity, sustainability, cultural immersion, and humanity, to reimagine what luxury can and should be.

Slow luxury

In an increasingly complex world that accelerates at an unnerving pace, slow travel offers a soothing balm for the soul and mental well-being – a deliberate pause to reconnect with what (and who) truly matters. For some, it’s a radical reclamation, an opportunity to immerse themselves in the present moment, fostering deeper connections with the places and people they encounter.

Belmond, the exemplar of timeless elegance, storytelling and soul-stirring luxury, has embraced a ‘slow luxury’ philosophy this year. Their unscripted journeys are celebrations of refinement where the pace of travel becomes as enriching as the destinations. Every detail, from their exquisite hotels and trains to serene waterborne retreats, remains thoughtfully curated: a collection of savoured moments that unfold slowly, deeply and meaningfully for their guests over time.

To celebrate ‘slow luxury’, Belmond has launched yet another iconic railway experience: the Britannic Explorer, the first luxury sleeper train in England and Wales, which is set to debut in July. This journey is somewhat symbolic of Belmond, reminding travellers of the power of connection and the railway’s romantic legacy as an escape and gateway to new adventures. The Britannic Explorer will offer three scenic routes through Cornwall, the Lake District and Wales, with guided excursions and exclusive access to cultural treasures along the way. Gastronomy will take centre stage (or carriage, rather) with bespoke menus crafted by Michelin-starred, British (of course) chef Simon Rogan.

Meanwhile, Les Bateaux Belmond, the brand’s fleet of seven floating luxury canal barges, has appointed Chef Dominique Crenn as its first culinary curator for the 2025 season. Renowned for her three Michelin stars – she was the first woman in France to receive them – and her commitment to innovation and sustainability, Chef Crenn will curate two signature menus for cruises through Burgundy, Champagne and the South of France. As her new menu debuts this year, Chef Crenn shares a personal milestone… she will celebrate her first wedding anniversary to her wife, actress Maria Bello.

Who runs the world?

At ILTM Cannes, The Experientialist was honoured to meet some powerful, diverse women driving the world’s most exceptional luxury brands. These remarkable individuals, whose expertise and vision are reshaping the future of travel, served as a true inspiration. In an era where progress on diversity, equity and inclusion is increasingly under threat – especially amidst the regressive policies of figures like President Trump – we feel that it is more vital than ever to spotlight role models who are celebrated not just for their gender, but for their immense talent, stewardship, leadership and groundbreaking contributions.

A sense of Euphoria

Maria Mavrikou’s personal journey to opening Euphoria Retreat in the Peloponnese is nothing short of amazing. A cancer survivor – once told she had only a 20% chance of living past her illness – Maria’s story is one of resilience, transformation and finding beauty in life’s unpredictability.

Throughout her recovery, she sought solace and strength from nature, particularly the serene landscapes of the Greek countryside. She found peace in the rolling hills, the azure waters and the calming sounds of the ocean. During her healing process, Maria made a promise to herself that, once she had triumphed over her illness, she would create a space where others could find the same solace, healing and rejuvenation.

Euphoria Retreat is a 45-suite sanctuary designed to help others find peace, balance and wellness. The resort merges luxury, wellness, and nature with a holistic approach to health, blending traditional Chinese medicine, Greek philosophy and medical science.

Nature’s playground

While we remain on the subject of strong women, did you know that Saint Lucia is the only sovereign nation named after a woman? It is also the motherland of the world’s fastest woman – Julien Alfred – who set the new Olympic 100m sprint record at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Julien has often spoken about how Saint Lucia motivates her as a runner, inspired by the natural beauty, vibrant culture and the strong sense of community the country offers. Saint Lucia’s love for sports and moreover its recent resilience in overcoming the Covid pandemic, natural disasters and long-established socio-economic issues brought on by colonialism, fuel her ambition to excel.

Visitors to Saint Lucia will know it for its idyllic beaches and incredible luxury resorts. But travellers can take a page out of Julien’s book and set off on their own physically demanding test – the Three Peaks Challenge. The challenge is a multi-day hike that involves climbing the island’s three highest peaks: Mount Gimie (950 m/3,117 ft), Petit Piton (749 m/2,461 ft), and Gros Piton (798 m/2,619 ft). It is popular among outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers, offering an opportunity to experience the natural beauty of the island’s rugged terrain, lush rainforests and stunning panoramic views.

This said, Saint Lucia’s Five Bottle Challenge – tasting five different types of rum produced at local distilleries and learning about the island’s storied and sometimes harrowing history as a result – may be more our style.

Caribbean without the crowds

The Turks and Caicos Islands, renowned for their pristine, untouched beaches, shimmering turquoise waters and intimate, exclusive resorts, are rapidly emerging as a destination of choice for discerning luxury travellers. Offering a serene escape from the overrun hotspots of the Caribbean, this idyllic archipelago provides a rare sense of seclusion and tranquillity.

With over-tourism becoming an increasing concern worldwide, Turks and Caicos are uniquely positioned to address the challenge, ensuring the delicate balance of its natural environment is protected, its cultural heritage preserved and sustainable economic growth secured for local communities.

Furthermore, the islands remain largely inaccessible to standard cruise ships, with no passenger port infrastructure. This means visitors can indulge in world-class hospitality and unparalleled natural beauty while basking in the serenity of a destination still untouched by mass tourism.

On Pine Cay, a secluded, 800-acre private island on the edge of the world’s third-largest barrier reef, just a short boat ride from Providenciales, guests can experience the pinnacle of barefoot luxury. With just thirteen exquisite beachfront rooms and suites, this Relais & Châteaux hideaway offers an intimate resort setting blessed with one of the Caribbean’s most breathtaking beaches.

Meanwhile, the soon-to-open Salterra Resort & Spa is set to become the newest jewel in Turks and Caicos’ luxury hospitality crown. Situated on the secluded Salterra Beach of South Caicos – so named for its historic salt mines – the resort will offer guests an exclusive retreat amid pristine white sands and crystalline waters. As part of Marriott’s Luxury Collection, Salterra draws inspiration from the island’s sea salt industry, a legacy that will surely infuse its five-star wellness and culinary experiences.

Beyond indulgence, Salterra is deeply committed to environmental stewardship. The resort has partnered with local organisations on coral restoration and wildlife conservation initiatives, including efforts to protect the island’s population of ‘wild’ donkeys… descendants of those that once transported salt from the salinas to the harbour in the 17th century.

Say “I do” in Colombia

This year marks nearly ten years since Colombia made a significant leap forward in LGBTQ+ rights by equalising its marriage and adoption laws for same-sex couples. So, why not celebrate this milestone (and love) in the UNESCO-listed old town of Cartagena?

Casa San Agustín is a stunning gem of Spanish colonial architecture, set within three meticulously restored 17th-century mansions. This boutique hotel offers an air of refined intimacy, with its whitewashed walls, wooden balconies draped in bougainvillea and secluded courtyards, all tinged with romance. Perfect for a private buy-out, the hotel features just 30 beautifully appointed rooms and suites, each exuding elegance with handcrafted details, curated antiques, and original frescoes. It provides a dreamlike setting for a wedding.

A short stroll away, Casa Pestagua, its stunning sister property, offers an equally enchanting escape. Known as “the most beautiful house in Cartagena”, this palatial mansion-turned-boutique-hotel was once the home of an 18th-century aristocrat and radiates Colombian opulence. As a proud member of Relais & Châteaux, Casa Pestagua boasts eleven sumptuously designed suites, a tranquil inner courtyard, and a rooftop terrace overlooking Cartagena’s colourful skyline, also setting the stage for the most unforgettable “I dos”.

Together – or even separately – Casa San Agustín and Casa Pestagua form Cartagena’s most intimate and exclusive wedding destinations. Whether exchanging vows beneath flickering candlelight in a centuries-old courtyard, dancing beneath the stars, or indulging in a luxurious honeymoon surrounded by the magic of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, these two remarkable properties offer an unparalleled romantic escape.

For the ultimate experience, combine your stay with a visit to Barú beach, just a short boat ride from Cartagena. This rustic yet refined retreat embraces the untouched beauty of nature, where powder-soft Caribbean sands meet impossibly turquoise waters. Exclusivity is key at the Acasi Private Rustic Beach, which welcomes no more than twelve guests at a time. Accessible only by boat, this hidden sanctuary invites travellers to unwind beneath swaying palms, indulge in freshly caught seafood and bask in the serenity of the Colombian coast in private.

Nordics now

The Nordics – particularly Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden – have seen a remarkable resurgence as a luxury travel destination, and it’s no coincidence that the region is becoming increasingly popular as summer temperatures across Europe soar. With global warming driving extreme heatwaves in traditional Mediterranean hotspots, travellers are seeking cooler, more comfortable alternatives and experiencing the year-round joys of the Nordics as a result.

What’s not to love? From charming cities and stunning landscapes to exclusive experiences and impeccable luxury, the region offers a unique blend of high-end comfort and access to unspoilt nature. The Nordics is home to a culture of sustainability and inclusion, not to mention haute design.

In Finland’s Lakeland region, the largest lake district in Europe, comprising close to 200,000 individual lakes, Kotona Manor is a sustainably built architectural spectacle. The retreat is set to open this summer. Its name, “Kotona”, means “at home” in Finnish, reflecting the vision of its owners, Kimmo and Taru (high school sweethearts in the 1980s who reunited after 23 years apart) to create a space where visitors to their eleven luxurious suites feel at ease.

Kotona Manor emphasises sustainability and harmony with the environment, allowing guests to immerse themselves in life on the lakes – untainted, pure, and clean – drawing inspiration, sustenance, and recreation from it. Moreover, you’ll experience the Finnish way of life through Kotona’s approach to personalised services and tailored activities, including traditional wood-burning saunas and wellness treatments using natural ingredients from the surrounding landscape.

A return to ‘true’ luxury…

Luxury travel and its unscripted journeys in their truest sense, are about exclusivity, rarity, intimacy and an ineffable sense of belonging. Kokomo Private Island, on Fiji’s pristine Kadavu archipelago, is the very embodiment of this philosophy. Unlike the myriad of other ultra-luxurious retreats scattered across the South Pacific, Kokomo offers a profound homecoming; not just to nature, but to oneself.

The cerulean waters and their endless coral gardens – among the richest in the world – provide a breathtaking backdrop. The island is cradled by the Great Astrolabe Reef, a diver’s utopia, where manta rays glide with effortless grace and the marine world unfurls in a riot of colour.

What truly sets Kokomo apart, however, is its authenticity and its ability to bring guests into its storytelling. Moreover, the Fijian concept of vanua, a spiritual connection to the land, sea, and people, is not just spoken of but lived. Perhaps the most profound luxury that Kokomo offers is mental space; something that we all could do with in today’s world. At Kokomo, time slows, breaths deepen and life – real, untamed and unscripted – returns.
