Hotel AWA
Puerto Varas, Chile

To say the AWA is exceptional is selling it short. This chic newcomer to the Chilean hotel scene brings with it a level of contemporary design finesse unseen in a region of more traditional, wooden lodge-esque places to stay. On walking in, we were greeted by what can be best described as the most modern of ski-chalets – rustic furniture and welcoming fireplaces included. Then throw in lashings of New York designer boutique hotel, minus the attitude – coffee table books, comfy leather sofas, custom glassware and super friendly staff. Our room was sprawling, with awe-inspiring views of the Lake Llanquihue just outside. We weren’t really inclined to leave our suite but thought we should and were glad we did. Stepping just outside the property made us feel like we’d ventured into a filmic wonderland – from the emerald green water to black sand beaches, not to mention of course the towering, snow-capped Osorno volcano.

Hotel AWA has also introduced a super-stylish private villa located on the shores of the lake just twenty metres from the main hotel. A 400 square-metre villa, the hotel’s latest addition sleeps a maximum of eight people in fully-equipped surrounds featuring a state-of-the-art kitchen and a sprawling private terrace for that ultimate deluxe factor. We’ve yet to experience the villa for ourselves, but we heard only good things – perhaps it’s time for our return to this beautiful hotel!

Make sure to try their delicious Pisco sour, allegedly the best (but isn’t it always?) in all of Chile.
