There’s something intoxicatingly poetic about the Chao Phraya River at dusk. It shimmers like a silken ribbon flung across the lap of Krung Thep (Bangkok), its waters tinted peach and gold by the disappearing sun. A river that has witnessed centuries of Thai life unfold along its banks – merchants and travellers, monks and street vendors, palaces and slums – now flows past Capella Bangkok, which sits proudly on it, as if newly enthroned. At the time of our visit, it had just been named the best of the world’s best hotels. This is a hotel that hasn’t just claimed its place in this storied landscape – in a few short years, it has become a part of its soul.
When Capella Bangkok first opened its gates, Bangkok’s luxury hospitality scene held its breath. Could this newcomer – with its clean lines, muted palettes and startling lack of traditional Thai embellishments or modern “bling” – make a splash in a city of world-leading five-star hotels? The answer, as we discovered, was a resounding yes. More than a splash, Capella Bangkok made waves, earning its crown as one of the finest hotels not just in Thailand, but the world, sweeping accolades and capturing the hearts of luxury travellers who crave authenticity.
It’s not just what Capella Bangkok is – but what it isn’t – that sets it apart. When we checked in, there was no cavernous, chandeliered lobby echoing with a thousand anonymous footsteps. Instead, guests arrive in the hush of the private, guests-only Living Room, where check-in is handled with calm efficiency, warmth, refreshing drinks and jasmine-scented towels. It felt like being welcomed into an impossibly stylish friend’s riverside mansion – a friend, mind you, with impeccable taste and just that oh-so-‘minor’ obsession with detail.
Designed by the masterful minds at Bamo, Capella Bangkok’s interiors are a hushed ode to sophisticated, modern riverside life. There are whispering nods to Thai heritage in the floating silk screens, gilded woodwork and swirling, water-like patterns in the marble. Light floods every space. Here, light isn’t just a function of design; it dances across surfaces, twinkles off glass and seduces the senses in that uniquely Bangkok way: always on the cusp of decadence, but never tipping over. And of course, every view leads your eye back to the Chao Phraya, or River of Kings.
The rooms – 101 of them – are sanctuaries of elegance. Having stayed several times and tried various categories, we can attest to that. Our favourite, the Verandah Suite, a glorious 209 sqm / 2,250 sq ft of calm indulgence, felt more like a millionaire’s pied-à-terre than a hotel room. The terrace, with its private plunge pool and lazy-day daybed, offered front-row seats to the theatre of the river. Boats chugged by, birds wheeled overhead, and we sat there soaking in the sun, Capella-own-brand bubbles in hand.
For the ultimate OutThere escape, guests can opt for one of the Riverside Villas – complete with outdoor hot tubs right on the river’s edge. They are unapologetically fabulous and are also the only private villas in Bangkok with this kind of setup, and that is saying something in a city with no shortage of posh.

While you’re Out There |
The team at the Capella Bangkok puts on an amazing programme of sustainable, experiential activities under the moniker ‘Capella Curates’. And even we well-seasoned Bangkok visitors were surprised by their deep dive (or rather, drive) by bike into the narrow alleyways of the old city to witness real Bangkok life. We coasted through multicultural neighbourhoods, stopping off at some great local places to eat and drink. We were also thrilled to see that there were inclusive experiences too, like a Muay Thai lesson with one of the country’s top female martial artists and transgender role models. |
Since we first visited at its opening, Capella Bangkok has grown beautifully. The hotel has been named among the world’s best – not by accident, but through a relentless pursuit of the exceptional. What makes Capella so special isn’t just its aesthetic or its address (though having both certainly helps). It’s the care with which it curates the guest experience. Guests are assigned a Capella Culturist, a personal concierge who doesn’t just book dinner but seems to divine your whims with precision.
Capella Bangkok’s quietly powerful commitment to inclusivity remains – for us – a defining ethos. From the very beginning, its allyship with the LGBTQ+ community has been unapologetic. Staff are trained not only to accommodate but to welcome, understand and celebrate difference.
But then, even the most right-on retreat needs to impress on the plate – and here, Capella Bangkok overachieved. At Côte by Mauro Colagreco, the flavours of the Riviera collided with the terroir of Thailand in a dance that we found unexpected and exquisite. One-Michelin-starred and climbing, this wasn’t a restaurant that relied on theatrics. The dishes – clean, bold, precise – spoke for themselves, and the sommelier’s selection of wines and sakes pushed the envelope in the best possible way.
Stella, the bar, is a mood all its own. Part speakeasy, part Gatsby-esque fantasy, it is already a legend in its own right. We came for the cocktails, but stayed for the people-watching. We of course didn’t leave without greeting the bar’s unofficial mascot, a life-size peacock made entirely of shimmering gems and white feathers, who looked like she had seen some things and wasn’t telling.
Where does Capella Bangkok go from here? The answer lies in evolution, not expansion. The hotel doesn’t need to be bigger – it needs to continue being braver. Its leadership understands that luxury today is as much about values as indulgence. In a city where every new hotel opening screams louder than the last, Capella’s quiet confidence – and deep connection to its location and its people – sets it apart. While other hotels jostle for attention with rooftop clubs or Instagrammable gimmicks, Capella Bangkok remains confident and assured in its own rhythm.
We know the OutThere travellers will fall in love with Capella Bangkok – people who seek nuance and soul when they go out into the world. It also resonates with those who value inclusivity not as an add-on but as a must-have. It is for those who want Bangkok without the bling, Thailand without the clichés. It is for the changemakers, the experience-seekers, the design obsessives and the storytellers.
It may not be perfectly right if it’s your first ever time in Thailand and you’re looking to connect with the quintessentially Thai. But for those like us who habitually return – year after year, in fact – it’s a sanctuary that feels both familiar and freshly inspiring, and every visit unfolds like a chapter in our ongoing love affair with Bangkok.
Capella Bangkok has proven that luxury, when paired with purpose and place, becomes something truly memorable. And in a city, country and world that’s ever noisier, that is something worth travelling for.
