Taj Samudra
Colombo, Sri Lanka

The Taj Samudra, part of the East Asian super-luxe chain – Taj Hotels – known for inimitable hospitality provides the very best of the Indian subcontinent with lashings of local charm.

Set in lush gardens the Taj Samudra is one of the oldest high-end hotels in Colombo. With that comes some old-school luxury in its aesthetic … think marble, potted palms and latticework arches throughout, in an almost country club vibe.

That said, our suite surprised us somewhat, with soft furnishing in bright splashes of colour that we wouldn’t have expected before checking in, showcasing the hotel’s more sociable personality. And it goes without saying that premium Taj Samudra accommodation all make the most of the hotel’s location right next to the ocean, with views looking out to sea offering a peaceful and serene atmosphere in-room. It is magical as the sun sets over the water and the rays of amber light flood the room, offering a true sense of place without even having to try.

There is also plenty to write home about the food here, a global masterclass in culinary excellence. From local Sri Lankan hoppers at breakfast-time to the seafood-fest luncheon, fresh from the ocean at its Crab bistro, to delicately prepared, imported Japanese sashimi for dinner at Yumi, its lauded, contemporary, Japanese restaurant.

While by staying here, we didn’t get to experience the super-modern glitz of the skyscraper properties that Colombo is known for, we were certainly glad we stayed, as we benefitted from the unparalleled experience in service and the highest standard of luxury, as expected of Taj.

The property faces the sea at Galle Face Beach, which has an uninterrupted westerly view. Sunsets galore from the property itself, or to go local, head to the infamous promenade.
