Fort Bazaar, Galle, Sri Lanka

Fort Bazaar
Galle, Sri Lanka

As they say in Galle – or anywhere in the world, in fact – “location is everything”. That’s just one reason why Fort Bazaar, a former spice merchant’s home turned luxury hotel, in the heart of the 17th-century fort has got the attention of jet-setters visiting Sri Lanka and is firmly on their wishlists.

Fort Bazaar says it like it is. The former home of a spice merchant, this property is steeped in history from the time when Galle was a crucial, strategic port, but is making its own history now, as one of the fortified Sri Lankan city’s most fabulous places to stay.

The aesthetic at Fort Bazaar is a complete breath of fresh air from the ‘historical chic’ ambience prevalent in the rest of Galle’s luxury properties. The vibe here is Middle Eastern, perfectly playing into its back-story, with 15 small, but perfectly formed rooms that are minimalist, contemporary and stylish – each as inviting as the other – and come complete with sumptuous four-poster beds and compact bathrooms. We’d suggest booking into a Bazaar bedroom, ask for one on the upper floor. Conversely, the Banyan bedrooms have bijou terraces, that although is considered an ‘upgrade’, are much smaller in size.

Church Street Social, the hotel’s eatery is a fine place to graze on a diverse and international menu. It is renowned around town, so we often found it filled with fellow travellers from all over the world, but if you want to escape the madding crowd for a bit of me/us-time (we did), check out the roof terrace.
